World War One was beginning to rage in Europe, having begun in August 1914.  The US would not enter the war until April 2017.   Click Here for a History Channel website chronicling the titanic struggle, day by day.   We'll keep you posted on major events from time to time as the WW1 centennial progresses.

This aerial photo of trenches in France was taken 95 years after the the first Battle of the Somme, which would ignite on July 1, a hundred years ago this coming summer.  One of the most horrific battles in all recorded history, more than a million people were wounded or killed in total. The British alone suffered approximately 60,000 casualties on the first day of fighting (after a week of heavy artillery shelling on German fortifications, which was nowhere near as effective as the Allies hoped it would be).
