A wonderful young man lost far too soon.
Please note the support services available.

A message from WATERVILLE CENTRAL SCHOOL DISTRICT
Good afternoon,
It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that I inform you of the unexpected death of one of our 6th grade students. Last evening, Owen Fortnam tragically lost his life due to a sledding accident. This presents a tremendous loss to Owen's family and friends and also to our students, teachers, staff, and community members.
This loss is sure to raise many emotions and concerns for our entire district, especially our students. As you discuss this loss with your child, please know that our counselors and social workers can provide additional support. Tomorrow, we will be opening the MPS library from 1:00-3:00pm, to not only offer grief and loss counseling, but to also support our school community as we struggle to process this tragic news. This same support will also be available throughout the school day, on Monday, February 25th.
The Waterville community is one of tremendous strength and support; I am sure that we will lean on each other and find comfort during this difficult time, as we remember Owen.
Thank you,
Maureen Gray
Elementary Principal

- IN MEMORIAM -

Philippa S. Brown
April 10, 1937 - February 15, 2019

The hardworking body and mind that started blogging in Waterville in 2006
"This blog is about life in Waterville - a small village in Upstate New York that was first settled in 1792 - and is intended as an adjunct and continuation of a column called "In Timely Manner" which has appeared on a regular basis in the "Waterville Times" for the past two years or more.
In "At Home in the Huddle" the writer will include those social notes and items of interest to the residents of the community as well as to those who once lived in Waterville and also for the edification and/or amusement of those who may read this, in years to come, wondering what life was like in this little village, "long ago."
Although we venture from the hard copy of newsprint to the medium of the internet - an enormous leap in technology - we shall not take that same leap in style and shall continue, as we have in the past, to emulate the precision and prose of those who served this social purpose a century past. The advantages to the writer are several: space limitations and deadlines "Begone!" And - with considerable luck and perseverance - photographs can appear!
This series will assuredly include remarks about the ongoing Department of Transportation Highway Reconstruction Project, the status of crops in outlying fields, announcements of events planned and details of delights experienced at events past, bits of history and early days here, in the "Huddle," but it can be NOTHING without the readers' communiqu├ęs! We shall welcome them whether they arrive by post, by telephone or electronically! "

In keeping with these objectives, we are looking forward to a collaboration that happened to be put into motion over the last few weeks for more history, as well as memories (which are history in the making). Be on the lookout for photos and/or prompts from the Times that you can help us flesh out, connect, and build on.

Of course, Flip left quite a legacy here at the library aside from passing down the blog. The Barton-Brown Observatory, many informative and laughter filled 'Old Timers' Story Swap' years, wonderful archives, artwork, and more.
