From Brian Bogan:
To the editor Utica Observer Dispatch

Jan. 30, 2016
The Jan. 26, 2016 issue of the Utica OD headlined  ” Area students not college ready.”  The article states that according to the NYS Education Dept. a student who does not receive at least an 80 on one of the Math Regents and at least a 75 on the English Regents is not ready to maintain a C average at a Community College.  I then looked at the chart on page 4 and found my school district, Waterville, listed at 36.4% and in the bottom half of the list. I retired from teaching at Waterville two years ago and know it is a fine school district with a dedicated, well qualified staff and administration. More importantly, I am president of the Brothertown Scholarship Fund (similar to Dollars for Scholars). Our organization coordinates the dispersal of scholarship money for approximately 45 scholarships. We receive and review the first semester transcripts of the Waterville graduates before we release the scholarship money. The newspaper article is listing data for the group of students who would have graduated in 2015. We are in the middle of receiving and reviewing those transcripts now. So I had to use the data from NYSED site for class of 2014 because we have those transcripts in our file.  The website states that the Waterville Class of 2014 had 56 graduates with a graduation rate of 98%. Only one student had dropped out. Of the students who had applied for our financial assistance and had submitted their transcripts, 31 had a grade point average (gpa) above 2.0 (C avg.) This number does not include the students who attended college but did not need financial assistance or students who went to college but missed the deadline for applying. Some of these students did very well at college but I do not have access to their transcripts. It does not include students who chose to go into the military first before attending college. My point is that if we only use the 31 transcripts that I have in my possession the rate of students from Waterville with grade point average above 2.0 is 55% and I know if I included the others it would be much higher. I am also confident that when I receive all of the transcripts for Class of 2015 the results will be similar.
I am not disputing the numbers NYSED stated for students who have or have not received above 80 on Math Regents or above 75 on English Regents. I am disputing the correlation they say exists between those test scores and a student’s success rate at college. I have the numbers for Waterville but I believe other school districts could probably also prove my point. I do not want to take anything away from the districts listed near the top. They do a fine job, also. But we are proud of our Waterville School District and encourage people to move here and join us when moving into central New York.  I would hate to see a family not consider moving to Waterville based on that article.

From Coach Jody Hildreth:
What an exhausting, yet exciting, day! Loaded a bus at 7:45 am to head to our last volleyball tournament of the year. After a rocky start, we finished second in the pool play and won the championship beating Cooperstown, who we have not been able to beat all year! Then we went back to Waterville for a quick bite of pizza. then it was off to NY Mills for our last divisional match. Defeating them 3-1 makes us co-champions of our division (shared with Remsen).
