Presidents’ Day is an American holiday celebrated on the third Monday in February. Originally established in 1885 in recognition of President George Washington, it is still officially called “Washington’s Birthday” by the federal government. Traditionally celebrated on February 22—Washington’s actual day of birth—the holiday became popularly known as Presidents’ Day after it was moved as part of 1971’s Uniform Monday Holiday Act, an attempt to create more three-day weekends for the nation’s workers. While several states still have individual holidays honoring the birthdays of Washington, Abraham Lincoln and other figures, Presidents’ Day is now popularly viewed as a day to celebrate all U.S. presidents past and present (history.com).

Girls were able to bring a doll and a favorite person for a fun morning filled

Congratulations to The Oratorical Contest Winners!

Winners in the boys’ division were: Ethan Whitehead, 2^nd place; John Brouillette, 1^st place; and Isaiah Snow, 3^rd place. The 1^st place winner of the girls’ division was Janelle Cleary, 2^nd place went to Amber Coe, and Kerrigan Tilbe and MacKenzie Evans tied for third place. The topic of the contest was “How My Best Brings Out the Best in Others.” Both first place winners moved on to the New York – New England Zone Competition where John Brouillette placed first in the boys’ division and Janelle placed second in the girls’. Optimist member Brian Bogan organized the Oratorical Program. Thanks to all who made the contest successful. Special thanks to Waterville English teacher, Tammy Picolla who worked with the students.
