Space Milestone: International Space Station Launch
December 4, 1998
The shuttle Endeavor took a U.S. component of the space station named Unity into orbit 220 miles from Earth where spacewalking astronauts fastened it to a component launched by the Russians, November 20th, 1998. The Unity Node contains more than 50,000 mechanical items, 216 lines to carry fluids and gases, and 121 internal and external electrical cables using six miles of wire.
