- AROUND TOWN -

Gas & Milk:

Our favorite photos of the week:
Gaining local awe, Jody Hildreth ventured into the caves along Route 315 yesterday. After many inquisitive responses, he followed up with this information:
Yesterday I posted a photo of "the caves" on route 315 between Waterville and Deansboro. Many did guess the correct location. I thought I would share other photos and descriptions here since I saw several comments asking what it is like inside.
First off, it is wet! I needed a ladder to climb into the cave and you need to go straight through the waterfall at the mouth opening. Fortunately, I wore a good waterproof jacket, but that did not protect my legs which were soaking wet when I exited the cave.
Once inside the cave, it is very small and no room to stand up. I spent about an hour in there, sitting and crouching the whole time. The ceiling is constantly dripping - not good for camera equipment. The size of the room is hard to judge, but I wold guess about 10' x 12'. The floor is littered with old bottles - glass and tin. Many are broken. There are a few exposed tree roots on the wall of the cave.

Looking towards the back of the cave. There is standing water - a very small "pool" in the back corner. The ceiling has interesting formations. What looks like the beginning of soda straws which are constantly leaking.

Wavy curtain formations in another part of the ceiling.

Earlier in the week, the Waterville Historical Society posted this postcard of "The Cave" from once upon a time. As well as this more recognizable photo of the outside.

-IN THE NEWS- Although the groundhog did just predict an early spring and it certainly felt that way for a few days, it seems we are going to be getting a little more winter. With predictions of lake effect snow up to 10 inches by Friday morning and frigid weather coming this weekend it's probably best if we all enjoy this time doing something indoors with friends and family. For the latest on this winter weather visit cnycentral.com . ****** -IN THE MAIL- -The Farmers Market has been cancelled for today- From the Waterville Farmers Market: "Because of the weather showing more snow and gusty winds into Thursday, we are canceling today's market at Morgan's Hardware.
