Waterville Historical Society, 220 East Main Street, Sunday June 11, 2 pm
Bob Allers: The Cooper's Trade
Erik Larson: Mapping Waterville History

 Retired science teacher and traditional cooper Bob Allers will demonstrate techniques of coopering or barrel-making and discuss the history of the cooper's trade, including Waterville area coopers. For centuries, barrels and kegs were the main containers used to store and transport food and drink, so the cooper was an essential part of commerce and the food distribution system. Allers taught at Vernon-Verona-Sherrill Schools in 1976-96, and at New Hartford Schools until his retirement in 2010. Then, Erik Larson will present Mapping Waterville History, an Eagle Scout geocaching project on the historic architecture of Waterville's Main Street. Boy Scout Troop 108 will assist with setup and provide refreshments. The program is free and open to the public. Waterville Historical Society is accessible to visitors using wheelchairs.
