- AROUND TOWN -

We're all thrilled to see this capture by Philippa Brown

"Yesterday afternoon on California Road, between the first two farms, about a car's-length away from me. I wish I'd taken more pictures, but I just sat there, dumbstruck, because I'd never been that close to an eagle, before. He finally did fly away and the huge white "fan" of his tail feathers was a mental image I'll never forget."

Brothertown Scholarship
17th Annual Recognition Dinner
"The 17th Annual Recognition Dinner on June 8, 2016 was held at Four Eleven Tower (Michael’s Fine Food and Spirits).  Committee President Brian Bogan and donors in attendance personally recognized the students receiving the designated awards.  The scholarship total for 2016 was $21,700.

Mr. Bogan explained the history of the scholarship program and the dollar amount and number of students receiving scholarships since the program's inception.  All WCS college and military bound seniors are eligible for a Brothertown Scholarship Award.  Applicants are required to fill out a simple application available in the Guidance Office.  At the dinner students are given a certificate and after the first semester of college, students submit their college transcript to the Guidance Office and receive their check by mail."

This phenomenal capture by Jody Hildreth:

"Dictamnus Albus, also known as Gas Plant, Burning Bush and Dittany.
I was told about this flammable plant (which produces its own methane gas) six year's ago by Flip Brown.  I thought it sounded like an interesting plant to photograph.  Problem is, it is difficult to find a nursery that sells it.  I scoured the Internet and finally found a nursery on the west coast.  Another problem, it can take up to three years to bloom. Yet another problem, it didn't ignite the first year of bloom, or the second, or the third.  But this year... success!  I have been waiting six years to capture a photo like this, and I am hoping for more and better in the years to come. This photo is actually 4 photos stitched together to show how the flames travel up the blooming stalks."

Tis the season.  Wild Strawberries are out as well as many cultivated ones at local stops.  These ones can be found on Babbott Field- although we're not sure if we recommend eating them from underfoot.

-IN THE NEWS- Although the groundhog did just predict an early spring and it certainly felt that way for a few days, it seems we are going to be getting a little more winter.
