This aerial photo of trenches in France was taken 95 years after the the first  Battle of the Somme , which would ignite on July 1, a hundred years ago this coming summer.  One of the most horrific battles in all recorded history, more than a million people were wounded or killed in total. The  British  alone suffered approximately 60,000 casualties on the first day of fighting (after a week of heavy artillery shelling on German fortifications, which was nowhere near as effective
